But I would love to see FromSoft take a detour from this formula for just a moment and do what they used to do best… pave a new path for imitators and aspiring developers to follow. And Sekiro, even though I personally didn’t like it, can’t deny that it’s a masterpiece! These games are amazing and I’m very VERY excited to play Elden Ring when it is finished. Even Dark Souls 2, which I didn’t love but I did enjoy, was better than most other games. I adore Dark souls 1, 3, and Bloodborne to no end. Sure we have atmospheric puzzle solving horror games like Layers of Fear, Outlast (sort of), Alien Isolation, Amnesia, and the likes but nothing comes close to what Echo Night redone would be like. I think it would deliver a gameplay style that just simply doesn’t exist today. I know a lot of my passion for this game is nostalgia but I went back a couple of years ago and watched part of a silent playthrough of the game.

What I would love is if Fromsoft, who I think owns the full rights to the game at this point, were to remake/reimagine the original Echo night with the main theme song reworked and everything. I wasn’t as big of a fan of it but it wasn’t bad or anything. It looks amazing but I don’t mess with emulators so I don’t think there’s a feasible way to get my hands on it. The first sequel was a Japan-only release as far as I can tell. There were two sequels that followed the original. But it was just the atmosphere of the game that left me exploring every nook and cranny out of desperate desire to find just one more thing.

I remember something so terrifying about having to rush through a dark room while a ghost girl is floating toward me from behind, as I reach for a lightswitch!Įven Though the overall map of the game is extremely small, I remember staring through the windows of the ship that looked into the ocean from below, squinting my eyes in hopes of finding some kind of sea creature to swim by. There are some dark spirits that attack you and you have to make sure the lights are turned on within these areas and the concept of aiding them in finishing their unfinished business still holds true. You do end up going outside the ship in other lands but it’s all very self contained and there are no sprawling open world concepts here.

You simply solve puzzles that revolve around their unfinished business in order to set them free and then you’ll unlock more places within the ship to discover and more ghosts to help. They are just trapped with unfinished business surrounding the game’s Mcguffin, which is a jeweled dagger. Most of these ghosts are friendly to the player and pose no threat. The game was slow and the controls were awkward, even for the time, but the game blew my mind! You spend the majority of the game on a ship full of ghosts. The answer was usually, “wait for your birthday or Christmas” but for some reason, on this occasion, she grabbed it.

I remember knowing literally nothing about it but seeing the case at Walmart and asking my mother if she would purchase it for me. One of my absolutely favorite games as a kid was a game called Echo Night.
